Question: It’s cold. It’s wet. It’s green. What is it?
Tip: it’s not the Incredible Hulk on ice-skates. Nor a pickled gherkin in a freshly-rinsed ramekin.
Answer:The land is green, the sky is grey (not always!) and the tea is biscuit orange. Talking of tea, here is the place where anything from an immense family drama to winning a game of tiddlywinks calls forth yet another ‘nice cup of tea.’. These are the countries where you can visit villages with names like Muckanaghederdauhaulia and Six Mile Bottom, where you can see people kissing stones and saluting magpies? (the Irish superstition says if you.see a lone magpie salute it and say good morning, captain’ to stave off bad luck.
With gentle summers and cosy winters, this little green corner of Europe is a treasure trove of ancient woodlands and rugged coastlines that contain a diverse range of people who speak 5 different languages and make over 700 cheeses. Talking of food. I know what you’re thinking: ‘all they eat is fish and chips’ but did you know that London is the second most Michelin starred city Europe? And according to Ranker.com, the 3rd best city in the world to eat?. And the natives don’t limit their food to mere nutrition. In Gloucester, UK, they run down the hill in hot pursuit of a rolling ball of cheese and on Shrove Tuesday across the UK and Ireland people race along the streets flipping pancakes in the air.
This is the zone of the blazingly beautiful, the poetically dramatic landscape and at times the totally eccentric. No surprise then that Lonely Planet have just named England the second-best place to visit on Earth- for its historic buildings, quaint villages and rolling countryside. While Ireland boasts a jaw-dropping figure for all stat-loving tourist operators: If you took the entire population of Ireland and squeezed it into Dublin, you’d still have less people than visit Dublin every year!
